The Almost One Hourglass
"When a man sits with a pretty girl for an hour, it seems like a minute. But let him sit on a hot stove for a minute — and it's longer than any hour. That's relativity." - Einstein
The feeling of time depends so much on you place you’re in and your state of mind, and this hourglass gives us a visceral reminder of this truth. We’re amazed at how quickly its white grains slip through its fulcrum on some days, while on others they seem to slouch reluctantly through, even though it is always 45 minutes that has passed. Studies have shown that to be the optimal frequency at which we should take breaks from focused work, and there couldn’t be more beautiful way to remind yourself to do so.
The Classic Scissors
As true to form as it gets. Designed for daily use, this classic tool is crafted of brassy-hued stainless steel with a matte finish. Grips lined in black plastic provide traction, comfort, and contrast.
The Harrison Desk
If there is a single item that encapsulates the soul of Perch, it is the Emerson desk. We like to think that this is the kind of desk where Emerson might have written his estimable Self Reliance. But Waldo, as he was known to his friends, would have swiftly rejoined- this is the desk where you will write your own. Designed to become a cornerstone of your working life, this desk is a dark rich expanse of a Perch, a canvas to lay out your thoughts, a haven to kick up your feet. Inspired by the minimalism and simplicity of Bauhaus designers like Marcel Breuer, this desk is a collaboration between Perch and one of our favorite high end furniture designers here in NYC. Fashioned entirely from solid Mahogany and handcrafted by skilled carpenters in Nicaragua, this desk is built to be handed down, and appreciates with time. The desk features 3 inward-angled drawers that disappear from many angles. The hand-waxed wood sliders allow them to be open and closed smoothly with even your pinky. We used ingenious mortice and tenon joints instead of screws to lend elegance and sturdiness to the design. Can be set up in a spacious bedroom or living room, or for the lucky among us, a room of its own. Packed flat in four pieces, the desk can be easily assembled within 10 minutes - if you are in NYC we’ll even assemble it for you free of charge. Give it a try for 30 days, and if it doesn’t work for you we will come pick it up for free and fully refund you.
Two Level Office Tray
With a clean, light grey finish, this two level tray is both a throwback to workspaces of the 1950's, and a brilliant solution for sorting files, stowing magazines or corralling unruly paper piles.
Wire Waste Can
Sometimes it’s the slightly disheveled, imperfect objects that endear themselves to us the most. This waste can sets itself apart from the office superstore variety with its hand twisted iron wiring, which affords it personality without sacrificing function. With a design straight from a vintage factory floor, it’s a durable but understated resting place for your discarded items.
Woven Ghana Storage Basket
This beautifully woven basket is more utilitarian than it looks. Hand crafted in weaving villages in Ghana, the basket is used locally to carry goods to the market. Made from local elephant grass with a durable leather handle, this basket can withstand any errand and also makes a great home for the unexpected things that come through your workspace. It is also deceptively spacious- we’ve stored a whole year of New Yorkers in ours.
